Fastems: Enabling improved availability, reliability and performance

Fastems is a The House of Intelligent CNC Automation. The company is a world-leading supplier of CNC automation solutions with over 40 years of experience and more than 4,500 installations across over 100 machine tool and other device brands. As an open integrator, Fastems addresses the fundamental challenges and inefficiencies associated with variable batch (high-mix) production, which are experienced by all industrial manufacturers – from local machine shops to global enterprises. The company’s mission is to help manufacturers maximize the use of the 8,760 hours available each year.

Fastems focuses on creating value-adding digital solutions and data-based services that enhance availability, reliability, and performance for their customers. The company’s ambition is to evolve from being an automation partner to becoming an end-to-end lifetime productivity partner for its customers. Fastems automation systems enable customers to increase productivity through more efficient use of their resources. Moreover, these systems can be modified, extended, and modernized to meet changing needs.

Seeking growth from value-adding services to minimize the downtime as well as increase utilization and total output

Fastems systems are designed to last for years, even decades, when properly maintained and serviced. Traditionally, the life cycle services business has been built on repair and maintenance services, spare parts sales, and more recently, modernizations. The service business potential for Fastems’ factory automation systems differs from that of typical machine tools or moving equipment, where consumables, tools, and wear parts form the foundation for recurring business. In contrast, for automation systems with very limited wear parts and consumables, the services business can grow only around value-adding services that help customers minimize downtime, increase utilization rates, and boost the total output of the system. To achieve this, Fastems needs to develop condition monitoring, remote, data-based intelligent troubleshooting, and predictive maintenance services.

By joining the Industry X project, Fastems aims to learn from and share information with other companies facing similar challenges and development needs. In the project, Fastems researches, compares, and identifies the necessary architectures, data pipelines, data sources, and data management and analytics capabilities for future value-adding, data-driven services. These capabilities include AI-enhanced troubleshooting, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance. Fastems aims to build a sustainable platform for the future technical development and offering of value-adding smart services.
