Tampere University, Multimodal Interaction Research Group (MMIG): Helping people to interact more naturally and efficiently with multimodal interaction

Tampere University is Finland’s second-largest university, comprising seven faculties that conduct scientific research in technology, health, and society, providing top-tier education in these fields.

The Multimodal Interaction Research Group (MMIG), TAUCHI Research Center, is led by Professor Roope Raisamo. The group specializes in constructive and experimental research related to augmented reality, multimodal interaction, haptics, and interaction technologies. Their goal is to explore how multimodal interaction can enable people to interact more naturally and efficiently – using multiple senses – with computers, machines, and other people.

The Multimodal Interaction Research Group has expertise in multisensory information presentation (including visualization), digital twins, AR interfaces, remote operation and supervision of machinery, support for situational awareness, and the development of interactive demonstrators.

In the Industry X project, the group focuses on researching and developing extended reality solutions for industrial applications, such as remote maintenance, remote supervision, training, and on-site maintenance. They also aim to create multimodal presentations of context-sensitive information to support the supervision and control of industrial processes, as well as the design and simulation of products to be manufactured.
